Alex Chilton, 1950-2010.

Mountain Stage mourns the loss of one of popular music's brightest stars, Alex Chilton. The former Box Tops singer and leader of Big Star made two appearances on Mountain Stage, first in 1992 and again in 1997.

Read his obituary from Memphis paper "Commercial Appeal" here.

His performance of "Guantan Amerika" was included on our Mountain Stage Best of Volume 3 CD - available on CD or get the mp3 at Amazon. We've streamed the track below, featuring Ron Easley on bass and Doug Garrison on drums, along with Chilton on guitar and vocals.

Loudon Wainwright's latest release
Grammy winner Loudon Wainwright will make his 13th appearance on our show and his first since releasing "High, Wide & Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project." It was named "Best Traditional Folk Album" at this year's Grammy awards,  and Loudon gave a classy "thank you" to the late Kate McGarrigle  for teaching him to flail the banjo. See LWIII's acceptance speech here.

Never one to idle very long, Wainwright has just released "Songs for the New Depression," a collection of timely numbers geared towards the economic times in which we live. You can hear his "Cash for Clunkers" there.
